World Mental Health Day – Mental Health in YA

HELLO!!

I have been taking a break from social media for the past 7 weeks and have slowly been introducing myself back to it and I’m officially back on my blog!!!

Today (October 10th) marks World Mental Health Day a day to spread awareness and understanding about mental health.

Fact: Over 260 million people suffer anxiety disorders

Fact: Over 300 million people suffer with depression

Fact: 1 in 6 people in the past week experienced a common mental health problem

As a society we must learn to be kinder to both ourselves and others. You cannot know what someone is going through or just how hard it was for them to get up or even leave the house today. Having personally and currently struggling with mental health issues the most important thing to remember is that it is okay to not be okay and you should never be ashamed of admitting that you need help. There are many useful organisations that can support you such as…

(these are help sites that work in the UK but please feel free to see if they work for your country)

Onto the Books…

2-  The Shock of Fall by Nathan Filer

Mental health books (Erica)

My current read for University & So far I am loving it!!!

‘I’ll tell you what happened because it will be a good way to introduce my brother. His name was Simon. I think you’re going to like him. I really do. But if a couple of pages he’ll be dead. And he was never the same after that.’

3- When We Collided by Emery Lord

9781408870082We are seventeen and shattered and still dancing. We have messy, throbbing hearts, and we are stronger than anyone could ever know…

Jonah never thought a girl like Vivi would come along.

Vivi didn’t know Jonah would light up her world.

Neither of them expected a summer like this…a summer that would rewrite their futures.

In an unflinching story about new love, old wounds, and forces beyond our control, two teens find that when you collide with the right person at just the right time, it will change you forever.

4-  Love Letters to the Dead by Ava Dellaria

18140047It begins as an assignment for English class: Write a letter to a dead person.

Laurel chooses Kurt Cobain because her sister, May, loved him. And he died young, just like May. Soon, Laurel has a notebook full of letters to the dead—to people like Janis Joplin, Heath Ledger, Amelia Earhart, and Amy Winehouse—though she never gives a single one of them to her teacher. She writes about starting high school, navigating the choppy waters of new friendships, learning to live with her splintering family, falling in love for the first time, and, most important, trying to grieve for May. But how do you mourn for someone you haven’t forgiven? It’s not until Laurel has written the truth about what happened to herself that she can finally accept what happened to May. And only when Laurel has begun to see her sister as the person she was—lovely and amazing and deeply flawed—can she truly start to discover her own path. In a voice that’s as lyrical and as true as a favorite song, Ava Dellaira writes about one girl’s journey through life’s challenges with a haunting and often heartbreaking beauty.

5- I’ll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson

image“We were all heading for each other on a collision course, no matter what. Maybe some people are just meant to be in the same story.”

At first, Jude and her twin brother Noah, are inseparable. Noah draws constantly and is falling in love with the charismatic boy next door, while daredevil Jude wears red-red lipstick, cliff-dives, and does all the talking for both of them.

Years later, they are barely speaking. Something has happened to change the twins in different yet equally devastating ways . . . but then Jude meets an intriguing, irresistible boy and a mysterious new mentor.

The early years are Noah’s to tell; the later years are Jude’s. But they each have only half the story, and if they can only find their way back to one another, they’ll have a chance to remake their world.

6- Will Grayson Will Grayson by John Green

51oUZKRwlcLWill Grayson meets Will Grayson. One cold night, in a most unlikely corner of Chicago, two strangers are about to cross paths. From that moment on, their world will collide and lives intertwine. It’s not that far from Evanston to Naperville, but Chicago suburbanites Will Grayson and Will Grayson might as well live on different planets. When fate delivers them both to the same surprising crossroads, the Will Graysons find their lives overlapping and hurtling in new and unexpected directions. With a push from friends new and old – including the massive, and massively fabulous, Tiny Cooper, offensive lineman and musical theater auteur extraordinaire – Will and Will begin building toward respective romantic turns-of-heart and the epic production of history’s most awesome high school musical.

7- Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

16068905Cath is a Simon Snow fan. Okay, the whole world is a Simon Snow fan… But for Cath, being a fan is her life—and she’s really good at it. She and her twin sister, Wren, ensconced themselves in the Simon Snow series when they were just kids; it’s what got them through their mother leaving. Reading. Rereading. Hanging out in Simon Snow forums, writing Simon Snow fan fiction, dressing up like the characters for every movie premiere. Cath’s sister has mostly grown away from fandom, but Cath can’t let go. She doesn’t want to. Now that they’re going to college, Wren has told Cath she doesn’t want to be roommates. Cath is on her own, completely outside of her comfort zone. She’s got a surly roommate with a charming, always-around boyfriend, a fiction-writing professor who thinks fan fiction is the end of the civilized world, a handsome classmate who only wants to talk about words… And she can’t stop worrying about her dad, who’s loving and fragile and has never really been alone. For Cath, the question is: Can she do this? Can she make it without Wren holding her hand? Is she ready to start living her own life? Writing her own stories? And does she even want to move on if it means leaving Simon Snow behind?

8- Fans of the Impossible Life by Kate Scelsa

24039396Mira is starting over at Saint Francis Prep. She promised her parents she would at least try to pretend that she could act like a functioning human this time, not a girl who can’t get out of bed for days on end, who only feels awake when she’s with Sebby.

Jeremy is the painfully shy art nerd at Saint Francis who’s been in self-imposed isolation after an incident that ruined his last year of school. When he sees Sebby for the first time across the school lawn, it’s as if he’s been expecting this blond, lanky boy with mischief glinting in his eye.

Sebby, Mira’s gay best friend, is a boy who seems to carry sunlight around with him. Even as life in his foster home starts to take its toll, Sebby and Mira together craft a world of magic rituals and impromptu road trips, designed to fix the broken parts of their lives.

As Jeremy finds himself drawn into Sebby and Mira’s world, he begins to understand the secrets that they hide in order to protect themselves, to keep each other safe from those who don’t understand their quest to live for the impossible.

9- We Were Liars by E. Lockhart

16143347A beautiful and distinguished family.
A private island.
A brilliant, damaged girl; a passionate, political boy.
A group of four friends—the Liars—whose friendship turns destructive.
A revolution. An accident. A secret.
Lies upon lies.
True love.
The truth.

10- All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven

18460392Theodore Finch is fascinated by death, and he constantly thinks of ways he might kill himself. But each time, something good, no matter how small, stops him.
Violet Markey lives for the future, counting the days until graduation, when she can escape her Indiana town and her aching grief in the wake of her sister’s recent death.
When Finch and Violet meet on the ledge of the bell tower at school, it’s unclear who saves whom. And when they pair up on a project to discover the “natural wonders” of their state, both Finch and Violet make more important discoveries: It’s only with Violet that Finch can be himself—a weird, funny, live-out-loud guy who’s not such a freak after all. And it’s only with Finch that Violet can forget to count away the days and start living them. But as Violet’s world grows, Finch’s begins to shrink.

11- The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky

4327066Charlie is a freshman. And while he’s not the biggest geek in the school, he is by no means popular. Shy, introspective, intelligent beyond his years yet socially awkward, he is a wallflower, caught between trying to live his life and trying to run from it. Charlie is attempting to navigate his way through uncharted territory: the world of first dates and mix tapes, family dramas and new friends; the world of sex, drugs, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show, when all one requires is that perfect song on that perfect drive to feel infinite. But he can’t stay on the sideline forever. Standing on the fringes of life offers a unique perspective. But there comes a time to see what it looks like from the dance floor. The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a deeply affecting coming-of-age story that will spirit you back to those wild and poignant roller-coaster days known as growing up.

12- Looking for Alaska by John Green

99561Before. Miles “Pudge” Halter’s whole existence has been one big nonevent, and his obsession with famous last words has only made him crave the “Great Perhaps” (François Rabelais, poet) even more. He heads off to the sometimes crazy, possibly unstable, and anything-but-boring world of Culver Creek Boarding School, and his life becomes the opposite of safe. Because down the hall is Alaska Young. The gorgeous, clever, funny, sexy, self-destructive, screwed-up, and utterly fascinating Alaska Young, who is an event unto herself. She pulls Pudge into her world, launches him into the Great Perhaps, and steals his heart.

After. Nothing is ever the same.

Please be kind to everyone 🙂

20 Magical Years of Harry Potter

As almost everyone in the world knows this Monday marked 20 magical years since the first publication of ‘Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone’.

In the past 20 years Harry Potter has become such an important aspect of so many peoples lives including my own. For me, Harry Potter first became a part of my live through the films as the first movie was released when I was only 3 years old. I loved the magic and the idea of Hogwarts a place where children could go to train to be a witch or wizard. As I got older the books then became an important part of my life as reading them was like shutting off my own world and entering a world of magic and endless possibilities.  If you have not yet read the series I highly recommend you do as there are so many little details about the world that are missed from the movies and no matter your age you are guaranteed to enjoy the books!!!

I have had the privilege of visiting The Wizarding World of Harry Potter twice at the Warner Bros  Studios in Watford, London. Walking through the sets you forget that it is indeed a set and it is like being transported on the spot to Hogwarts and the Wizarding World.  I have a vlog of my latest visit which I will link here.

16830647_1611522828862946_478996441654261276_nI also have my love eternally inked to my skin which was beautifully done by a good friend Jack at Monsterink Tattoo Studio. I have a Deathly Hallows tattoo on my neck as a reminder of how HP has ALWAYS filled my life with so much light, love and hope in these past few years when everything has seemed so dark.

“happiness can be found even in the darkest of times of one only remembers to turn on the light”💡

And Finally to Joanne,

Thank you for creating a world to which I can escape to. When the world is dark, your books are my Lumos. I’ll never be able to thank you enough for your determination and hard work that created these 7 beautiful books filled with magic and love. Thank you for sharing them with us all.

“Whether you return by page or the big screen, Hogwarts will always be there to welcome you home.”

FUN FACT: I own 5 copies of Philosophers Stone…

Mental Health in YA | World Mental Health Day

October 10th is World Mental Health Day and is a day for global mental health education , awareness and advocacy. So to help raise awareness I will be sharing a few recommendations of AMAZING books I have read that include aspects of mental health / illness.

FACT: 20% of 13 to 18 year olds suffer or will suffer with a serious mental illness. Thats one in 5 young adults who are currently or will eventually have to learn to cope with anything from depression to anxiety, mood disorders, eating disorders, etc.

FACT: Mixed Anxiety and Depression are the most common mental illnesses in Britain.

FACT: You are NEVER alone. You are NOT your illness.

Living with a mental illness can be extremely tough at times but with the right help and support it does become easier. Having personally experienced mental health issues, I am aware just how important it is that talking about mental health is normalised so that the stigma around it can eventually go away. Like all things it will take time but I believe that eventually with education and awareness it will be possible. This is why today is SO important.

Now, onto the books….

The Perks of being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky

Booktober – What Books I Plan to Read This Month…

ITS ALMOST HALLOWEEN!!!!!!!!!!!!! To celebrate Booktober I will be reading some spooky and fun reads that embrace the halloween and autumn spirit!!!!

Hollow City by Ransom Riggs

Currently Reading this so kind of cheating but…

51btkmubzbl-_sx320_bo1204203200_September 3, 1940. Ten Peculiar Children flee an army of deadly monsters. And only one person can help them- but she’s trapped in the body of a bird. The extraordinary journey that began in Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children continues as Jacob Portman and his newfound friends journey to London, the peculiar capital of the world. There, they hope to find a cure for their beloved head-mistress Miss Peregrine. But in this war-torn city, hideous surprises lurk around every corner. And before Jacob can deliver the peculiar children to safety, he must make an important decision about his love for Emma Bloom. Like its predecessor, this second novel in the Peculiar Children series blends thrilling fantasy with vintage photography to create a one-of-a-kind reading experience.

Library of Souls by Ransom Riggs

Bcs Ransom Riggs is my new fav….

libraryofsouls-coverThe adventure that began with Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children and continued in Hollow City comes to a thrilling conclusion with Library of Souls. As the story opens, sixteen-year-old Jacob discovers a powerful new ability, and soon he’s diving through history to rescue his peculiar companions from a heavily guarded fortress. Accompanying Jacob on his journey are Emma Bloom, a girl with fire at her fingertips, and Addison MacHenry, a dog with a nose for sniffing out lost children. They’ll travel from modern-day London to the labyrinthine alleys of Devil’s Acre, the most wretched slum in all of Victorian England. It’s a place where the fate of peculiar children everywhere will be decided once and for all. Like its predecessors, Library of Souls blends thrilling fantasy with never-before-published vintage photography to create a one-of-a-kind reading experience.

Tales of The Peculiar by Ransom Riggs

Bcs Ransom Riggs…

635959829705147713-tales-of-the-peculiar-coverBefore Miss Peregrine gave them a home, the story of peculiars was written in the Tales. Wealthy cannibals who dine on the discarded limbs of peculiars. A fork-tongued princess. The origins of the first ymbryne. These are but a few of the truly brilliant stories in Tales of the Peculiar—known to hide information about the peculiar world—first introduced by Ransom Riggs in his Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children series. Riggs now invites you to share his secrets of peculiar history, with a collection of original stories, as collected and annotated by Millard Nullings, ward of Miss Peregrine and scholar of all things peculiar.

Anna and The French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins

Not entirely spooky but on the 22nd of October – 28th October I will be in Paris so I have decided to read this book whilst there…

51puhnxv67l-_sx326_bo1204203200_Anna is looking forward to her senior year in Atlanta, where she has a great job, a loyal best friend, and a crush on the verge of becoming more. Which is why she is less than thrilled about being shipped off to boarding school in Paris–until she meets Étienne St. Clair. Smart, charming, beautiful, Étienne has it all…including a serious girlfriend. But in the City of Light, wishes have a way of coming true. Will a year of romantic near-misses end with their long-awaited French kiss?

I will be reading other books for university but these are the books I plan to read for leisure this month 😁

My Summer TBR

Like many other bibliophiles I also have a TBR pile, or should I say 2 shelves of books I have not yet read staring at me judging-ly, that consists of ridiculous amounts of books I have self-indulgently bought with all intentions of reading but just not had the time as of yet…..

however

This summer starts early for me as I sit my last A2 exam for college on the 20th of June which means I am then free to read as many books as my heart desires without feeling guilty as I should be revising – the last book I read was Lady Midnight and I haven’t had time to do anything but re-read  college books/plays for my exams *sigh* it will all be worth it in the end!!!

And as if exams being over soon wasn’t exciting enough on the 31st of July (THE DAY THAT HARRY POTTER AND THE CURSED CHILD COMES OUT) I fly out to New York City to spend 3 and a half weeks in the USA with my American family – shout out to my Auntie Ruth, Uncle Greame, Lucy & Jack – and I am sooooo excited as they live close to a three-story book store *le dies* Also CANNOT wait to visit Barnes & Noble 😀

So during my crazy summer I intend to read as many books as I possibly can and finally get on-top of my TBR and regain control.

These are the books/series I intend to marathon through this summer…

  • The ENTIRE Percy Jackson Series
  • Harry Potter and the Cursed Child – as soon as I get my hands on it
  • When We Collided
  • I’ll give you the Sun
  • The Summer I Turned Pretty series
  • Faceless
  • Beautfiul Broken Things
  • Roof Toppers
  • The Art of Being Normal
  • Carry On
  • Copper Gauntlet
  • We all Looked Up
  • Extraordinary Means
  • & a few more i’m not sure of yet

If you have any recommendations please let me know!!

Thank you for Reading  xo

Week 2 (17/08/15 to 23/08/15) ~  We will be reading Chapters 8 to 14

10 OF THE GREATEST MOMENTS FROM THE HP BOOKS

Many of the most magical and memorable moments from the books sadly did not make it into the films so here’s some of the best moments you’ve missed out on if you haven’t read the books (GO READ THEM YOUR NEVER TOO OLD).

  1. S.P.E.W. ~ Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare ~ where Hermione knits tiny clothes to try to free the Hogwarts House Elves & they do not like it. At all. BUT  Dobby finds them ALL.
  2. The House Elves of the Hogwarts Castle Kitchen. I LOVE THEM.
  3. WINKY
  4. When the Weasley’s come to pick Harry up in Goblet of Fire and get stuck in the Durdsleys fireplace – never ever not funny😂
  5. Finding out Nevilles backstory – what happened to his parents😭
  6. When Harry asks Luna to Slughorn’s Christmas party and he had a transfiguration class right before and the task was to change the colour of their eyebrows and Ron ends up giving himself and handlebar moustache😂 But when Harry finds Luna to ask her “I’d love to go with you as friends, said Luna beaming as he has never seen her beam before, nobody has ever asked me to a party before as a friend is that why you died your eyebrow? For the party? Should I do mine too?” 😂😂😂😂
  7. When Harry tells the Durdsleys to go into hiding before the Great War & as there leaving Dudsley says “I don’t think your a waste of space” 😓
  8. PEEVES
  9. “No need to call me sir” 😂😂😂😂
  10. When Ron gets his prefect badge and Mrs Weasley says “oh wonderful that’s everyone in the family” and Fred says “what are George and I, next door neighbours?” 😂😂😂

Happiness can be found in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light. ✨
